Hue Street - Spring 2004

Since the publication of the Autumn Newsletter John Clarke and Neil Molyneux have lead an excavation on the site of the new Magistrates’ Court in Hue Street. Unfortunately, we missed the late summer weather conditions and had to excavate during the bleak weather in the run up to Christmas. The daylight hours were the shortest and the water table higher than would have been preferred. Nevertheless a team of up to nine Section members at a time partook in the excavation.

The results were positive, in addition to evidence of the 19th century houses on the site, foundations were found from the courtyard of the outside privies and nearby an in-filled water cistern - no wonder there were outbreaks of cholera! The finds are being processed by the Section at the regular Thursday evening meetings.

Jersey is to be honoured in July by a visit from the Royal Archaeological Institute, the 150th annual excursion in its long history. The programme is being finalised but should touch on all aspects of Jersey’s past - fortunately there is too much for RAI to see in one three day visit - but it creates difficulties in deciding what to leave to another occasion.

The Section meets every Thursday evening (barring bad weather) at the La Hougue Bie workrooms; the evenings are spread between post excavation works on the finds of recent excavations, illustrated talks to reading and discussion evenings concerning submissions referred to the Section for archaeological comment.
