Mont Orgueil - Autumn 2000

A few dedicated members of the Section continue to work on Saturdays at Tesson Mill, a fascinating exercise in Jersey industrial archaeology. A few extra helpers would be welcome as time is running out although limited space precludes a large number. There is also a limited dig envisaged for early October under the direction of Dr Warwick Rodwell on the floor of a building at Mont Orgueil Castle.

As this Newsletter goes to print, the regular Thursday evening meetings continue to take the form of sifting through a large spoil heap at Mont Orgueil Castle created by excavation as part of the current restoration work. We were fortunate to be able to work on this as it is producing a large number of fragments of very early pottery, some of it thought to be 15th century, a mediaeval coin and pieces of early painted glass. Unfortunately dating is made more difficult because we do not know at precisely which levels the various finds originally lay. It is probable that, as the evenings close in, we may be unable to complete this task, unless a sufficient number of volunteers come forward to enable daytime work to take place.

If you can help, please phone the Section Secretary, Dr Ralph Nichols, on 862756.

It is difficult for the Section to forecast other activity as so much is unforeseen, arising in response to unexpected demands such as our chance learning of the Mont Orgueil spoil heap.
