What We Do - Spring 2005
What We Do - Spring 2005
Société members who are not archaeologists may have the idea that if there is no physical dig in progress, we merely hang up our shovels, trowels and brushes and become TV-watching couch potatoes. Nothing could be further from the truth. At the January committee meeting of the Section there were 26 items on the agenda plus what came up under AOB. There were 30 in February, even more in March.
Whatever, readers may wonder, do we talk about? Here are two examples.
We keep an eye on planning applications for work in archaeologically sensitive areas and, where possible, on work in progress. We clamour relentlessly but fruitlessly in the present island economic climate for the appointment of a States employed Island Archaeological Officer. Jersey is the only area in the British Isles without one and much of our archaeology and the knowledge of our past to stem from it must have been lost in the recent past as a consequence.
The Section meets on Thursday evenings at La Hougue Bie and a copy of the programme of either work or talks appears on the notice board outside the Société office. Visitors are always welcome.
