Aspects of the German Occupation - Autumn 2006
Earlier this year we spent an evening looking at smaller publications dealing with various aspects of the German Occupation. The aim of the meeting was to tease out material on rather specialized topics. We saw all ten books in the archive series published by the Jersey branch of the Channel Islands Occupation Society including German Armour in the Channel Islands [Michael Ginns] and The German Field Post Office in the CI [Michael Wieneke]. Among other books seen were The Sacking of the Masonic Temple in 1941, [Dennis Perrin], German M Class Minesweepers in the CI [John Wallbridge] and a philatelic item The 1942 Jersey 1/2d Arms – A Plating Study [Ian Griggs].
We continued the theme into our next meeting when we were able to examine the Jersey edition of the Festung [Green] books compiled by the occupying forces during World War II. Unfortunately, it is not complete and efforts are being made to find the missing sections. We also saw a personal album, beautifully illustrated, which belonged to Col. Hübner, who was the official German war artist in the Channel Islands and was responsible for many of the illustrations in the Festung. The other major item seen that evening was a photocopy of Die englischen Garnisonen auf Jersey, believed to be a companion volume to the Festung books. This photocopy is a working copy to which the owner has added an English translation and, as new material becomes available, is still adding biographical details, including photographs, of the senior officers in the islands at that time.
Our next meeting will be in the Arthur Mourant Room on Wednesday, 15th November 2006 when we shall be concentrating on programmes. There will be theatre related programmes, but we also expect to see programmes of other social events, for instance equestrian events, such as Point to Points, Gymkhanas and Race Meetings. We are assured that there will be at least one programme from the races held on Grouville common, in the nineteenth century, and also one from the Jersey International Road Race. All members are welcome to attend and if you have any interesting or rare programmes please come and share them with us. The meeting starts at 8 pm. with coffee being served from 7.45 pm.
