Bibliography Review - Autumn 2007

There are two problems which bibliophiles, at some time or other, have to address. Firstly, how to store or house their collection, and secondly, how to record and/or catalogue the individual items within that collection.

At our March meeting we discussed possible methods of cataloguing collections, a useful exercise in pointing members in directions they may consider taking. In the same manner that collectors set the parameters of their personal collection, so recording too is a personal decision. Few collectors still maintain their records on filing gards, kept in a filing drawer, but having to decide which computer programme is most suitable for their needs can be a bit daunting.

Reflecting on personal collecting for a moment, we have seen two sub-collections during the last six months. Frank Le Blancq brought his extensive collection of weather related books, magazines and articles to our May meeting, and in July Ken Syvret showed us his collection of books on the extended Cabot family.

Most book collectors do not regard their collections as investments, but more as something to be enjoyed, however, two recent news items are worthy of note. It was reported that a copy of one of the New Naturalist series of publications, admittedly on a somewhat specialised subject, which retailed at approximately £25 a few years ago had recently fetched over £2,000 at auction, and that £100 had been offered for a copy of the Jersey Evening Post Almanac for 2005, the last year that householders names had been included alongside property names. A practice now at odds with Data Protection Laws.

Continuing our policy of having occasional themed meetings, in November we shall be looking at all things agricultural, and associated subjects. We are guaranteed to see books about the Jersey Cow but if and Société member has any books or booklets on agriculture, or of general local interest which they would like to share with us, we should be pleased to see them at this meeting on Tuesday, 13th November 2007. We meet in the Arthur Mourant Room at 7 Pier Road and, as there are usually no more than a dozen or so people attending, our meetings are quite informal. We start at 8pm with coffee being served from 7.45pm.
