La Langue Jèrriaise Review - Autumn 2007

On the 23rd May our latest publication "A collection of Jérriais Literature" was launched in the Members' Room accompanied by freshly dug and finely tasting 'patates', some Nièr Beurre auvec des 'crème cratchi' et eune tâssée d'cidre. The Section was represented at LA Fête Nouormande at Briquebec and we joined in with other groups from Jersey for a very enjoyable day on the Sunday. Geraint Jennings collected a medal for his work in Les Nouvelles Chroniques du Don Balleine. Some copies of our publication were sold there to French language enthusiasts. Copies of the "Collection" are on sale in the Société Bookshop for £6.95, less 10% for Members.

In June there was a visit of Gallo speakers from Brittany contributing more to our knowledge of minority languages. East of a line roughly from St Brieuc to Vannes, this language is the gallo-roman (or Britto-Roman) spoken in Haute Bretagne (Le Pays Gallo) as far as Normandy from c.400AD, while Breton, from the immigrant Cornish and Welsh was spoken in the Basse Bretagne, west of this line.

The Second Volume of the dictionary published in 2005 is being prepared by the Don Balleine for publication by Christamas 2007. It will be the companion volume with English to Jèrriais translation.

The Section has chosen a lively harvest-time poem for this year's Eisteddfod, entitled "J'sommes en avou!". The recitation evening will be on Saturday, November 17th - "Allons Garçons! Allons Hardelles!"

The Don Balleine are planning to make a CD of traditional Jèrriais songs for releasing at Christmas 2008. They will be looking for singers to sing the songs for recording during next year.

There will be the usual Christmas service when all are welcome to come and sing hymns.

Next year the Fête Nouormande will be held in Jersey. Once again it is at the RJA & HS Showground in Trinity on the long weekend Saturday, May 26th 2008. The results and prizes for a writing competition will be presented at the Fête. Application for entries is through L'Office du Jèrriais at Highland Collecge, please.

The Section meets at 8pm on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 Pier Road. New and old members would be very welcome to come and join in our lively meetings about the local language, which are conducted in English. Allons! Allons!
