Photography Competition - Call for Entries
Photography Competition - Call for Entries
The Société Jersiaise in association with the National Trust for Jersey Coastline Campaign is sending out a 'Call for Entries' to the third annual Société Jersiaise Photography Competition.
Société Photographic Archivist Gareth Syvret said, 'For the 2007 event we received an overwhelming response of over three hundred and fifty high quality photographs. From this number our judges selected winning and commended images for a superb exhibition across three venues: the Société Jersiaise, Jersey Airport and Grève de Lecq Barracks, St Ouen, where the exhibition continues until 21st September 2008.'
As an innovation for 2007 we created an online gallery featuring all the entries for 2006 and 2007 at http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/photographic-archive/photo-gallery/. Photographers looking for inspiration may wish to access this resource online or visit the exhibition at Grève de Lecq Barracks which is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am - 5pm and 1-5pm on Sundays.
Four broad subject categories of Architecture, Coastline, Community and Natural History offer a starting point that encourages creative interpretation. Coastline, a new and popular subject category for 2007 continues in 2008, bringing into focus once again the sustained efforts of the National Trust for Jersey Coastline campaign to preserve areas of outstanding natural beauty on the Jersey coast. For more information about the Coastline Campaign and its aims visit: http://www.nationaltrustjersey.org.je/coast/.
The competition is open to the general public as well as Société Jersiaise members and there is a Junior Category for young photographers. There are three cash prizes to be won for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each subject category and the junior category. A small entry fee is payable by non-members, though there is no better time to join the Société and become eligible for free entry.
We do not just anticipate the submission of traditional images of the picturesque. Photography today functions as a powerful critical tool in the documentary and landscape genres in particular and a diversity of approaches will be welcomed by our panel. With just over two weeks until the closing date, photographers who wish to take up the chance to exhibit and publish their work are asked to finalise their entries, which must be delivered to the Société Jersiaise, 7 Pier Road, St Helier before 5pm on 26th September 2008. A presentation and exhibition preview will take place in the Société Jersiaise Members' Room on 17th December. The exhibition will be open to the public from 18th December.
Information leaflets and entry forms featuring some of the best images from 2007 are available from Société Jersiaise reception, 7 Pier Road, St Helier, telephone 758314 or via download from http://www.societe-jersiaise.org/resources/download-document/photography-competition-2008.html
We would like to thank our four sponsors: Framing Workshop Ltd, Le Masurier, HSBC Bank and iQ The Apple Shop for their generous support of this event.
