Photographic Archive Review - Autumn 2007

The decision to run a photography competition for a second year in 2008, on this occasion in association with the National Trust for Jersey Coastline Campaign, has been met with great interest and enthusiasm. At the time of writing we have received an overwhelming 376 images. With the photographers' work complete, we now progress to the tasks of judging, printing, framing and mounting the exhibition. Our judges for 2007 are: Mr Rowland 'Chick' Anthony, President Société Jersiaise; Mr Robin Briault, Photographer and Mr Dave Hellen, of HSBC Bank and Mr Mike Stentiford MBE on behalf of the National Trust for Jersey Coastline Campaign. A presentation and exhibition preview will take place in the Members' Room at the Société Christmas Gathering on the evening of 14th December. The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday 17th to Friday 21st December 2007 and Wednesday 2nd to Friday 11th January 2008 (closed at weekends). We are delighted to once again have the opportunity to show the exhibition at Jersey Airport, where it will be on display from 14th January to 15th February 2008. Due to recent changes at the airport the display will only be visible to travelling passengers who have cleared security. We would like to thank our four sponsors: Framing Workshop Ltd, J.F.(T.)U. Ltd, HSBC Bank and iQ The Apple Shop for their generous support of this event.

Following the lengthy process of researching current technologies, we were delighted to complete the installation of the new digitisation suite on the fourth floor at 7 Pier Road in June. This equipment, which enables high quality overhead digital imaging, is essential to the process of digitising conservation sensitive and large format items throughout our collections and brings enormous benefits in terms of perservation and access. The process of exacting standards in colour management and digital archiving, using associated software, has been completed and work to capture our collection of photograph albums is well underway. We would once again like to extend thanks to the Association of Jersey Charities and the estate of the late EDH Johnson for the financial support that has made this project possible.
