From the President - Autumn 2008
Something that most members have probably already appreciated is that the arch at the Weighbridge entrance to the Société and the Museum is now back in its original position. One reason why you may not have noticed the move is that it looks so much as if it had never been moved. The continuous frontage around Caledonia Place contributes to the generous and unconfined character of the new public open space. It would, however, still be welcome if a location could be found somewhere for the statue of Queen Victoria that once graced that area – and could provide an appropriate name.
As major work on the replacement of our air conditioning plant which services our archive area on the 4th floor is imminent following the development of the Royal Yacht Hotel, we will have to move some material temporarily into the space that we now have available in the Old Library at Number 9 Pier Road. We are considerably relieved to find that this elegant room will require much less redecoration than was feared: the problem of obtaining appropriate furnishings has, however, yet to be faced and is likely to call on funds that are not at present available.
