Your ancestor most likely worked on the breakwater at Elizabeth Castle which was to be dogged by several problems at great cost. At one stage it used some new techniques to local harbour building in using concrete type blocks which are still visible. I have not researched this breakwater, but it was always in the news at the time in the 1870's.

The last arm of main harbour was the Albert pier finished on July 8th,1853, and the Committee of Harbours voted a gratification of £120 to the Inspector of works. Now most of this grantite structure is covered or bordered in Concrete built flats/apartments or carparks.
