de ste Croix, Le Roux, Slous

I wonder if anyone can help me solve a puzzle, I know my great grandfather was Charles Raulin De Ste Croix born 1879. His father was Thomas who married Elizabeth Ann Le Roux from Newfoundland. I have found the family in the 1881 census. My problem is - according to the census Thomas was born in 1845.

I am working from an old handwritten tree, unfortunately the author, my great uncle is now deceased. His tree shows Charles DOB correctly as 1879 but Thomas as being baptised 1819.

Supposedly Thomas's parents were Jean Helier De Ste Croix bap 17.12.1794 and Esther Slous bap. St Brelade and deceased August 1828. (apparently he subsequently married Esther’s sister Jeanne Slous).

So (if you can follow this so far!) if Thomas was born 1845, as the census says, his mother predeceased his birth which of course is not possible!

If my uncle was right and he was born pre 1819 he was a father at 60 and the census is wrong???

Can anyone help shed light on this PLEASE!!!

Many many thanks, Stephanie - Australia
